Accompanying Poetry by Kirsten Hirst

An original sonnet written alongside the artwork.

Temperance

The temperate one who gave him all his peace
Her measured hell that made him feel so free
Until that time her bursting heart did cease
To hold the hope of his most precious greed.

The lighter waters lied by trickled stream
And tricked her back to chop her rooted trees.
Near storm-trapped lakes she leveled sturdy beams
And built a dam for fear that he might leave.

She held him fast, and called her trial grace
He asked for warmth, then called himself depraved.
For siphoned light revealed a covered face
With hollow eyes that would no more be saved.

The temperate one who gave him all his peace
Breaks from her measured hell to now flow free.
